I was asked a couple of weeks ago to paint some scenery for a school play called ‘The Peace Child’. The brief was ‘It’s daytime, with hills, a river in the middle and a bear cave’. With only two possible ‘painting days’ available the pressure was on.
The theatre backdrop was measured and 16 metres of calico was purchased. I cut this into 4 metre lengths which were then sewn together to make a large panel 4m x 4m approx.
I did a quick sketch 10% of the actual size so that I would keep the proportions of my large drawing on the calico the same as the sketch.
I used powder paint mixed with water to a thin consistancy which spread really well with a decorators brush. To finish, I mixed together some watered down PVA glue and glitter, applied it to the sun and river, which shimmered beautifully under the stage lights.
