Working with children, I’ve listened to them discussing everyday stuff and converstions about the world in which they live. Often I’ve heard the statement “Yeah well, when I grow up I’m gonna be famous and have loadsa money”. When I ask “Doing what?” The popular reply is “Being a popstar” or “Being a footballer”.
With all the programmes on tv glamourising fame and money it got me thinking about when I was 5 years old, and being asked what I wanted to be by my teacher. I remember wanting to be a fashion designer as my number 1 choice, then a teacher as my number 2 choice and finally a secretary as my third.
I decided to see if my young artists had any aspirations job-wise apart from winning the X Factor or Britain’s Got Talent (The Great British Bake Off is an exception because that acolade is useful and you don’t win money, just a very ugly trophy). Well I was pleasantly surprised …. just take a look.
Oh and if you’re wondering, I still do work in fashion, I teach art and running my businesses means I’m always doing secretarial duties. So children, follow your dreams, it can be done.
